Camera Filters

Filters work according to the principle of subtractive color mixing.

This ultimately means that the amount of light hitting the sensor is reduced (depending on the density of the filter).
They are classified according to size, filter effect and strength.
 
The most important filters are:

The 85 filter is a conversion filter - it is used to change the color temperature of the incident light on the sensor. It is orange colored and converts from 5,500K daylight to 3,400K artificial light.
The most common sizes are 40.5mm (round)/ 138mm (round)/ 3x3/ 4x4/ 4x5.6/ 6x6.
The light loss is about 2/3 f-stop.


85 filter
 
The 80 filter is the opposite of the 85 filter. It is colored blue and converts artificial light to daylight. Among others there is the 80A filter (3.200K up to 5.500K) and the 80B filter (3.400K up to 5.500K).
 
Typical sizes are 3x3/ 4x4/ 4x5.6/ 6x6. The light loss is about 2 f-stops.


80 filter

The ND filter (Neutral Density) reduces the amount of light, but without changing the quality of the light. It is most frequently available in the sizes 40.5mm (round)/ 138mm (round)/ 3x3/ 4x4/ 4x5.6/ 6x6 and, among others, in the strengths ND0.3 (1 f-stop light loss)/ ND0.6 (2 f-stops light loss)/ ND0.9 (3 f-stops light loss)/ ND1.2 (4 f-stops light loss).For more powerful ND filters (ND0.6 and higher), make sure that the filter tint does not cause any slight color shifts (e.g. towards magenta) which actually occurs in products of certain filter manufacturers. Therefore the use of high-quality ND filters is recommended.


ND Filter

The 81EF filter is used to create warmer shades of color. It converts 3.850K to 4.140K.
 
Typical sizes are 3x3/ 4x4/ 4x5.6/ 6x6. The light loss is about 2/3 f-stops.

POL filters enhance colors and contrasts, create a dramatic deep blue sky and reduce reflections from glass panes or water surfaces.


POL Filter
 
The graduated filter is available as HE (HardEdge) and SE (SoftEdge) version in various shades and gradient directions. This allows, for example, the sky to be significantly darkened or a sunset effect to be achieved.
