Recording Device Atomos Shogun Flame

The Atomos Shogun is an external audio and video recorder.

It is supporting RAW, ProRes and DNxHR formats. The unit measures about 7 inches and has an integrated 1920x1200 resolution IPS touch panel display screen. This display enables the device to be used as a monitor as well as a recorder. The device weighs about 730g, including the batteries and storage media, and is suitable for rigging with small cameras.

The Shogun supports recording resolutions up to 3840x2160 pixels, with support for UHD recording up to 30fps. If recording in HD-mode the Shogun can capture at up to 120fps, depending on the throughput of the memory. The Shogun supports the use of relatively cheap and ubiquitous 2.5" SSDs installed in caddies which are docked in the recorder. Normal 2.5" HDDs are also compatible, however, SSDs are preferable to HDDs due to the faster read/write speeds. It’s important to check the ratings of production SSDs to ensure they can write fast enough to record reliably in UHD.    HDMI 1.4b and 4k SDI-12G / HD-SDI video inputs and outputs are available on the device. These interfaces are high-performance and allow the transmission of resolutions up to UHD, both to professional peripherals via SDI, and through consumer-oriented devices via HDMI.

HD SLR cameras can be used with the Atomos Shogun, although these often only offer a Micro-HDMI output. This interface may not be suitable for day-to-day production use, due to its mechanical design; frequent plugging and unplugging can cause loose connections.

The Atomos Shogun can record in RAW, ProRes or DNxHD /HR . Support and availability of codecs depends on the firmware version that the device is running. Version 6.4 of the recorder enables the recording of 4K-DCI RAW (4096x2160) in Sony FS cameras, and with the update to V6.5, the Shogun can also record to RAW on the Canon C500 . With V6.6 it will be possible to store the aforementioned RAW formats and AJA and ARRIRAW next to ProRes and DNxHR in CinemaDNG. This is an open standard for raw data (DNG - Digital Negative). The signal is recorded at 4:2:2 10-bit sampled and offers many options in post-production.

The recorder allows the scaling of 4K signals in HD. It is therefore possible to monitor the camera output via the Shogun on a large external display.  This gives camera operators the opportunity to use the built-in tools to monitor exposure, colour and sharpness in addition to waveform, RGB parade, vectorscope, focus peaking, and false colour.  The recorder also offers the possibility to trim recorded material (only soft, no data is deleted), or to tag it, to help prepare for the edit. Final Cut Pro and Premiere have XML import compatibility for this and the additional metadata and trim information is stored together with the material.
