Kinefinity MAVO LF - In Depth (1 / 3)

The MAVO LF is Kinefinity's current flagship.

It features a full frame CMOS image sensor with an effective area of 36x24 mm. It can record in resolutions of up to 6K: 6,016×3,984. 

Comparing the MAVO LF with the MAVO S35, Kinefinity says the CMOS image sensor area is 2.25 times larger, the pixel pitch is 50% larger, the SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) is better and the image is cleaner.

The sensor of the MAVO LF can also be used in sensor drop modes or with oversampling. Available here are M4/3, S16 and S35.

S35 mode: maximum resolution 5K DCI (5.120×2.704).
M4/3: maximum resolution 3K (3.072×1.620).
S16 mode: maximum resolution 2K (2.048×1.080).


Resolution, Frame Rates and Codecs

The MAVO LF has a wide range of resolutions and frame rates to choose from. Almost all are available in both ProRes , including ProRes444 and ProRes444XQ, and cDNG RAW. The previously planned implementation of KineRAW has been cancelled. Instead, Kinefinity will soon rely on ProRes RAW and plans to make this available via update for the MAVO LF, among others. 

The currently available codecs are:

  • Compressed cDNG 12bit (3:1/5:1/7:1)
  • ProRes422HQ/422/LT/Proxy- 10bit
  • ProRes444 - 12bit
  • ProRes444XQ - 12bit

The camera is able to record full 6K DCI at up to 60fps in full frame. At 6K Wide (6.016×2.520), you can record at up to 75fps. Furthermore, up to 290 frames per second are available in S16 mode with 2K HD Wide (1.920×800).
In previous versions, it was not possible to record in full screen, S35 and M4/3 mode with FHD resolution. This resolution was previously only available when switching to S16 mode and accepting the strong sensor drop associated with it. In the meantime, however, this has been improved by a software update. Therefore the FHD resolution is now also available in S35 mode (including downsampling).


Dynamic range and sensor response

According to Kinefinity the MAVO LF offers more than 14 f-stops of dynamic range.




Dual Base ISO

The MAVO LF uses the Dual Base ISO system. It has two native ISO values: 5.120 and 800.
Between ISO 320 and ISO 1.280 the BaseISO is ISO800. And from ISO1.600 up to higher ISO values at ISO5.120. An exception is the EI- mode. There between ISO 200 and ISO2.000 the BaseISO800 is used. From ISO2.560 on, the higher BaseISO (5.120) is used.


Size and weight

The MAVO LF weighs only 990g (2.1 lb) and measures 115mm x 110mm x 95 mm (body only).


Ergonomics

The MAVO LF, like so many of today's cameras, is just a box that needs additional accessories if you plan to mount it on your shoulder or make it more useful.
Fortunately, Kinefinity offers a lot of accessories that allow you to configure the MAVO LF in the combination that suits you best.

One problem is that once you add a shoulder mount to the MAVO LF, you won't be able to access the menu or camera settings as easily. Since the SideGrip cannot be moved, it becomes practically useless in a shoulder configuration.
There are three mounting holes on the bottom of the camera. Two 3/8´ and one 1/4´ screws are available, but the possibilities for attaching additional accessories are limited due to the small housing.




Ease of use and operation

The MAVO LF has some classic push buttons, but some of the buttons could be better labeled. The menu button only has a symbol printed on it and not the lettering "Menu".
There is a button under the SSD slot that is not labeled and has a symbol that looks like a film strip. You must press this button to access the SSD media options menu.
Unfortunately, the keys and knobs have become a bit small in the current model, which makes mistakes when turning them more provocative.


Menu system

The menu system is certainly less complicated than some menus of other, established manufacturers.
There is a small LCD screen on the side of the camera body that displays important information about the camera status or settings. However, no changes to the settings are possible there. Furthermore: some settings can only be adjusted by using additional function buttons on the side of the housing and other settings can only be adjusted via the menu.

To access the menu and make changes, a monitor or EVF (Electronic View Finder) must be connected to the camera. The menu is divided into 6 categories:

  • RECORDING
  • LIVE VIEW
  • LUT
  • AUDIO
  • SYNC
  • SYSTEM

Camera settings can be saved via the menu (Configuration -> Recording -> Preset). The parameters that can be saved include:

  • Image format
  • Resolution
  • Frame rate/ number of frames
  • Shutter speed
  • Recording format


Performance

The MAVO LF uses Sony BP-U batteries. These batteries fit into the side handle, and this is the easiest way to keep the camera small and compact. If you want longer battery life, you can use the optional KineBACK-W and attach a V-Mount battery.
The basic consumption of the MAVO LF is only 23 W. This is very low and allows long runtimes with small batteries. If you use a larger V-Mount battery, such as a Hawkwoods 150Wh Mini-V-Lok, you can get pretty much all day with a single battery. However, if other accessories are used, such as EVF or monitors or +48V phantom power for a microphone, the consumption will be higher.

When the battery becomes very low, you will receive a warning that appears on the screen. The MAVO LF will then give you a countdown and it will shut down safely. 
Kinefinity also manufactures its own Mini V-Lock batteries. They are available with capacities of 73Wh and 145Wh.


Boot-up time

It takes about 20 seconds for the camera to boot up and be ready to shoot. Therefore the MAVO LF is not really suitable as a run-and-gun camera for news or documentaries.


White Balance

The camera has preset white balance values ranging from 2600K to 7000K. These preset values can be adjusted up or down in 100K steps. Unfortunately there is only 1 memory space for storing a self-created white balance value.
The white balance and color temperature are adjusted by directly adjusting the RGB channels of the sensor. This means that thereby the original RAW data are changed instead of applying a digital LUT. Although you can also change the white balance or color temperature during post production, it is still recommended to work with the white balance as it gives the source material more flexibility for post production.

Performing a manual white balance on the MAVO LF is not a very fast process. You have to go to the menu and select Configuration -> LiveView -> Custom White Balance. In addition, the camera has a CC- correction, so that green or magenta shifts can be compensated.

The menu also contains a white/grey card checker. This allows a direct comparison with a possibly existing white/grey card and thus a precise check of the set color value.

Waveform and Zebra

The waveform is displayed at the bottom of the screen and shows the brightness of the images in horizontal direction. By default the waveform is displayed with the LUT: KC-Neutral. The Waveform display always changes according to the LUT used. Waveform can also be set to display LOG.

The brightness distribution shown then refers to the actual LOG image. For example, if the Waveform is set to LUT, the white, even if it is above 100%, will not clip because the MAVO LF is recording in KineLog. However, if the Waveform is set to LOG, the white will definitely clip even if it is above 100%.
The Waveform display is marked with two main lines. The first one shows where an 18% gray map and the other one shows where 90% should be a white map when correctly exposed.

The zebras on the MAVO LF are a very easy way to show overexposed areas in the image. On the MAVO LF the zebra calculation is based on RAW data. This means that the image is almost overexposed when the zebra set to 90% shows hatching.
