Recording Media CF/CFast/CFexpress

CompactFlash (CF) is a flash memory mass storage device used mainly in portable electronic devices.

CF

●    Up to 512GB
●    Compatible with IDE and PCMCIA interfaces
●    Introduced in 1994, widespread in the area of digital photos, partly displaced by newer media (SD or CFast)

CFast 1.0 / 2.0

●    CFast 1 supports SATA 2.0 (300 MB/s) and CFast 2 supports SATA 3.0 (600 MB/s) transfer speeds.
●    Widely used, very good performance, and fast SATA transfers.
●    Used in many popular recording devices:  Atomos, Blackmagic, Arri Amira, Alexa Mini, XT / XR with adapter (see Codex Media) and some DSLRs.

CFexpress 

Is the logical further development of the CF standards, but it is neither mechanically nor electrically compatible with the CompactFlash interface. It initially provided for a PCIe 3.0 interface (up to 2 lanes) and NVMe 1.2 and was later expanded to 4 lanes. 

The first CFexpress memory cards were available in mid-2018, with capacities up to 256 GB. Cards with 1 TB were introduced in January 2019. Nikon and other manufacturers announced that they would also be able to use CFexpress as an alternative to XQD in their devices, possibly after a firmware upgrade.

There are 3 types of cards: Type A (28.0 mm × 20.0 mm × 2.8 mm), Type B (38.5 mm × 29.8 mm × 3.8 mm) and Type C (74.0 mm × 54.0 mm × 4.8 mm).
Type A offers read and write speeds up to 1,000 MB/s, Type B up to 2,000 MB/s and Type C up to 4,000 MB/s.

Card Reader

Compact Flash card readers are available with various interfaces such as Thunderbolt 2 or USB 3.0/3.1 for fast back-ups.
