Recording Media P2

P2 ("Professional Plug-In") is a professional digital recording solid-state memory storage media format introduced by Panasonic.

  • Developed by Panasonic, the P2 format was one of the earliest file-based recording formats for cameras. It has been in the market for about 10 years.
  • P2HD is at the heart of the Panasonic end-to-end media solution, providing support in cameras, decks, memory card recorders and drives.
  • A new microP2 SD memory card design has been introduced. This supports transfer rates of up to 2 Gbits/s and can be used in a P2 adaptor with many existing P2 cameras, although they may require a firmware update.
  • P2 uses the PCMCIA (type II) interface, so can be inserted directly into a number of laptops, and has it’s drivers available online. The newer microP2 cards can also be directly inserted in modern laptops for backup.
  • P2 cards are widely available

  • 30GB, 60GB (P2)
  • 256GB and 512GB (expressP2)
  • 32GB, 64GB (microP2)

  • As noted above, some P2 devices may require a  firmware update of the hardware necessary for use of microP2-P2 adapter
  • The expressP2 card is slightly thicker than standard P2 cards and therefore not mechanically compatible with every existing P2 devices
  • The cards are tested to 30,000 mating cycles
